Anti-Pollution Skincare

Anti-Pollution Skincare

The growth of mega-cities and urban means that more and more of us are now exposed to various environmental pollutants daily. It’s only natural that the interest in “anti-pollution” skincare is subsequently growing as we begin to understand the extent of this exposure and look to counteract the negative effects it can cause to the skin including accelerated skin ageing.

There are four main types of pollution:

Air pollution

Studies have that exposure to particle pollution in the air significantly correlates to an increase in signs of skin ageing. Further research has shown that test subjects living in urban areas with elevated levels of microscopic contaminants known as PAHs (Polyaromatic hydrocarbons) or in simple language, air pollution, had a 22% increase in pigmented spots, causing uneven skin tone.

Light pollution

We are exposed to blue light every day, and everywhere – whether from the sun or, increasingly, as artificial light from electronic devices. Research has shown that exposure to blue light can lead to changes in your skin cells, including cell shrinkage and death, speeding up the aging process.

Sun exposure

UV radiation is a part of the natural energy produced by the sun. There are two types of UV light that are known to contribute to changes in your skin: UVA and UVB. Exposure to both UVA and UVB introduces a cascade of detrimental damage to the skin including inflammation, hyperpigmentation, and premature ageing.

Dirt and debris

Highly polluted areas can also contribute to clogged pores, topical irritation and subsequent blemishes and breakouts.

How can anti-pollution skincare products help?

Think of anti-pollution skincare like a shield, creating an invisible armour against the elements. Look for products that help to protect the skin barrier against harmful microparticles and ingredients that work to nurture the skin’s natural defenses and protect against oxidative stress

pH balanced cleansing

A gentle cleanser will remove all traces of pollution from the skin whilst respecting the skin’s naturally occurring pH promoting a healthy skin barrier. We suggest Balancing Cleanser, a creamy multi-tasking cleanser suitable for all skin types, or for effortless makeup removal try our Melting Moment Cleansing Balm.

Targeted protection

Formulated with daily protection from environmental aggression in mind Hyaluronic 8 Super Serum, is a powerful hydrator that boasts anti-pollution ingredients  Cureberry and Pollushield. Clinically proven to reduce the collagen and elastin degrading enzymes and free radicals that are generated in the skin by blue light, Cureberry helps to protect against digital and solar-induced photoaging. Innovative Pollushield, works like a microscopic net, providing a barrier between pollution and the skin protecting it from potentially damaging particulate matter.

Antioxidants

City smog, exhaust fumes, cigarette smoke, dust, debris, and even pollen can all mean destructive free radicals that attach themselves to healthy skin cells contributing to oxidative stress and a compromised skin barrier. Daily application of Antioxidant-rich Vitamin serums can boost skin’s natural defenses and help ward off damaging free radicals. Shop our range of Vitamins here.

Remember your SPF

UV radiation from the sun, combined with pollutants, has a catalytic effect, causing greater damage to the skin. Always apply a broad-spectrum SPF before leaving the house each morning and at regular intervals during the day if out in unprotected sunlight. Try Daily Essential Moisturiser SPF 50+combining high protection sun protection with free-radical fighting vitamin E this product is an anti-pollution daily “must-have” .
